So You Read a Book About Feedback

So You Read a Book About Feedback

So, you've been diving into the world of feedback, trying to figure out how to build up your team to reach their full potential. Maybe you've picked up a popular management book, thinking it holds all the answers. And hey, creating a feedback culture sounds like a fantastic idea, right?

But then reality hits. You sit down for your first one-on-one, armed with what you learned, and deliver some honest feedback. You thought you nailed it, but your team member reacts defensively, maybe even gets upset. What went wrong? You followed the book, but it seems to have backfired.

Here's the thing – your team member didn't read the book. They're not on the same page as you, and suddenly, you've changed the game without them knowing. Their brain goes into overdrive, causing them to react defensively – blame it on the amygdala hijack.

So, what's the solution?

Training your team to receive feedback better is possible, but it takes time. Instead, try a simpler approach: wait for them to ask. When they're ready and willing, offer your insights on the areas they need help with.

Rather than pushing feedback onto everyone, focus on encouraging your team to ask questions. That way, you can  provide your honest feedback without catching them off guard.

And if they're not asking for feedback? Keep it simple: "You haven't asked me for feedback – why not? Is there something specific you want to discuss?"
